The Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust, established on 24 June 1981, is a Registered Charity (number 283337) in the United Kingdom. The Trust was originally administered by the British Council, but is now run independently, though the Council remains a trustee and provides some support.
Activities of the Trust The Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust helps Pakistani nationals to pursue post-graduate study and scholarship in the UK. The Trustees have the authority to use the income of the Trust’s funds for Pakistanis to 'follow courses of study, research or other educational pursuits which will advance the education of the said individual'. The Trust’s income is entirely from investments, and over 95% of this is spent on activity; administrative costs are kept to a minimum.
The Trust carries out its work in the following ways:
· Granting awards to individual students already in Britain, normally in the last year of a PhD, who require additional funding to help them finish their studies. The Trust is not a hardship fund and all applicants are required to demonstrate academic merit. The maximum grant is £2,000. Students will have to satisfy the Trustees that they will have sufficient funds from other sources to complete their course. · Awarding shared scholarships with a number of British universities for privately funded students from Pakistan accepted for taught Master's degrees. Criteria for Awards – Information for Students
The Trust can provide help to students from Pakistan who are in the final year of a postgraduate degree (normally a doctorate) at a recognised British University. Applicants must be citizens of Pakistan and normally resident in Pakistan. Applicants must provide the following information: · Details of their permanent address in Pakistan together with biographical details and a note on their intended career · Details of their course or research project and a realistic estimate of its completion date · Full details of their current financial position and of any awards that they have received from other sources · Details of all other applications that have been made for financial assistance, both in the UK and elsewhere · A letter of support from their academic supervisor
The Trust is not a hardship fund although financial need must be shown. Please note that Trustees consider applications primarily on the grounds of academic merit. There is no upper age limit but it is unusual for trustees to support students over the age of forty. The Trust is not a source of primary funding – the amount of any one award will not exceed £2,000. Support can be either towards fees or maintenance costs.
Please note that in normal circumstances, the Trust does not give grants to students already in receipt of full awards from any national or international agency. It will only consider requests from students originally funded in such a manner when the original award has expired and if there are exceptional circumstances. The Trust does not make retrospective grants or pay debts.
Students who think that they are eligible should apply to the Secretary in the first instance by email, and send details as requested above by e-mail (or post if preferred). The Secretary does not answer questions or consider requests over the telephone. Applications for grants are generally considered at 6 month intervals, in December and June, but in exceptional circumstances decisions on grants may be made outside these dates. All grants are given at the discretion of the Trustees whose decision is final.
